Safe Heavy Haul Practices for the Holiday Season

It’s the holiday season and for heavy haulers in San Diego, that means it’s time to be extra cautious while transporting oversized items over the road. Shoppers are out and about, folks are traveling to visit family, and traffic threatens delays.

All truck drivers are under pressure to perform on tight deadlines, heavy haul drivers included. We share some valuable tips on how to stay vigilant on the road.

Double-down on your truck and equipment

Driving during the holidays can be dangerous since the driver volume is much higher than usual. One way to stay safe is to ensure the mechanical side of things is reliable and ready.

You’ll want to inspect your rig before heading out, paying special attention to the tire pressure and the windshield wipers. Make sure the items you’re hauling are secured properly and you have escorts if needed when traveling over busy highways.

You’ll also want to make sure you have all of the necessary paperwork and permits ready to go.

Preparation is key

Another step you can take to alleviate stress on the road is by having an alternate plan in case of delays. Save a few different routes and pinpoint strategic places to pull over for rest if needed.

Fill up your tank if you know you’ll be on the highway for awhile and charge up communication devices. It’s also a good idea to have a roadside emergency kit in your rig, just in case.

Health is wealth

Oftentimes health gets left on the wayside during the holidays. It’s a high pressure time for heavy haul truckers, compromising proper rest and diet.

However, prioritizing health helps drivers to be attentive and energized while on the job. Getting 6-8 hours of sleep at night makes a big difference, as well as taking breaks after a couple of hours driving.

Keep a cooler stocked with healthy snacks and water, instead of splurging on energy drinks, chips, and fast food.
